The Nottingham and Singapore Breast Pathology Masterclass is organised by Professor Emad Rakha and Professor Puay Hoon Tan.

Professor
Emad Rakha

Emad Rakha is Professor of Breast Pathology and Consultant Pathologist at University of Nottingham and Nottingham University Hospitals Trust. He is a Senior Consultant at Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar and Adjunct Professor in two other universities.

Emad has developed, with Professor Ian Ellis, a national and international consultation breast pathology referral practice in Nottingham with more than 350 referral cases per year. He is the co-chair of the UK External Quality Assurance (EQA) Scheme and a member of several national and international committees in breast pathology, biobanking and screening.

Professor Rakha leads the Breast Pathology Research Group (BPRG), which has a national and international reputation for its research in diagnosis, classification of breast diseases, evaluation of clinical outcomes and understanding the mechanisms governing hormone response and cancer cells’ spread in breast cancer. ​The research team works with significant grants and partners to pioneer the digitisation of breast pathology using artificial intelligence to develop diagnostic and prognostic tools. ​

Emad has published over 500 publications in peer reviewed journals. He has written the UK national HER2 guidelines and has contributed to other breast pathology national guidelines and textbooks including the UK RCPath Breast Datasets and the WHO Blue Book. He runs the annual Nottingham Breast Pathology Masterclass and regularly contributes to other breast pathology training courses worldwide and lectures at national and international courses and scientific meetings.

Professor
Puay Hoon Tan

Professor Puay Hoon Tan is the pathologist at Luma Women’s Imaging/Luma Medical Centre. She is a key opinion leader in breast and urologic pathology, with active academic involvement in these pathology subspecialties.

Being a passionate researcher, Prof Tan has published widely with over 500 peer reviewed scientific papers. She was a Standing Editorial Board Member for the 5th series of the WHO Classification of Tumours, IARC, Lyon, and was also an expert member for the Breast (2019) and Genitourinary (2022) volumes in this latest series.

She was a Volume Editor for the WHO Classification of Tumours of the Breast 4th series (2012). Apart from a busy service largely focused on subspecialty surgical signouts, she has collaborated with many clinicians in translational studies of breast and prostate cancer. She participates regularly in regional and international meetings.

Her research interests in breast pathology centre around the classification of breast fibroepithelial lesions and their molecular pathogenesis, triple negative breast cancers, and ductal carcinoma in situ. In urologic pathology, she is engaged in prostate and renal cancer studies.

Prof Tan has held several international and regional leadership positions and is internationally recognised. She is a Past President of the International Society of Breast Pathology (ISBP), the immediate Past Convenor of the Assembly of the Asia-Pacific International Academies of Pathology, the immediate Past President of the Asian Breast Diseases Association and was a previous Councillor for Asia of the International Society of Urological Pathology. She was conferred the Norton-ISBP award in 2020 for excellence in breast pathology.

CPD/CME

Each masterclass is approved by the Royal College of Pathologists (8 CPD points). Approval is pending from the Singapore Medical Council (4 CME points).
